10 Common Weight Loss Myths (C’mon, We’re Not Stupid! Right?)

Myth #1-Weight Loss/Management is Complicated
Contrary to popular opinion, there is nothing complicated about losing weight.  In fact, some of the most effective programs for getting to your best weight very often turn out to be the simplest.  Like anything else, we are the ones who get in our own way with our own thinking by believing that it’s hard.  Our unconscious belief system is always working.  We have been conditioned to think it is hard so that the weight loss industry can step in and give you the latest and greatest program, formula, system, pill, potion or powder because it’s too hard or complicated to figure it out on your own!

Myth #2-Fat is Bad for You
Well, OK, there are certain types of fat that we are more likely to store, like saturated fats, but you don’t have to avoid fat altogether.  Trans fats are not healthy, but sometimes you just gotta have some French fries!  Here’s the deal, SOME fat in your diet is essential.  If you choose the poly-unsaturated and mono-unsaturated fats most of the time and less than 10% of the time you can indulge in your favorite ice-cream and you are going to be just fine.  Just use common sense and eat those desserts after a healthy meal so you are not overly hungry and your body can better utilize the extra sugar.  Also, eating fats are more likely to give you that full feeling, which can help stop you from over eating.  Finally, low fat food labels can be deceiving-just because its low in fat does not mean its low in calories or the healthiest choice!

Myth #3-You Need to Count Every Calorie or Fat Gram
Yikes! What a chore! If you want to lose weight, cutting calories is naturally going to be a part of the solution, but there is no need to be so precise that you have to account for every calorie or fat gram in the food that you eat, nor do you need to calculate exactly how many calories you burn.  As long as you eat healthy, wholesome foods, eat when you are hungry, stop when you are full and do activities you enjoy for exercise-you can and will lose weight safely and easily.

Myth #4-Carbs are Evil
Eating carbs—including pasta—won’t kill you, and actually is a healthy addition to your diet.  Eating carbs helps prevent kidney stones and a metabolic condition called ketosis.  Also, cutting out fruits and vegetables as some popular diets suggest is just plain crazy! These are chock full of important vitamins and minerals and the necessary dietary fiber we all need!  Nutritional experts agree that the best type of carbs to consume are the whole grain variety, whole wheat pasta and brown rice for example,  of the fiber and other nutritional benefits and also because they keep you full longer.  They are also more easily digested than highly processed carbs.

Myth #5-Snacks and Desserts Will Ruin a Diet
Oh boy! This is all just common sense, don’t you think? It’s not the snacks or desserts that make you fat so much as the type, frequency and quantity of the treat that gets you in trouble.  Snacking is necessary to avoid dips in blood sugar, keep energy levels high and avoid binging at main meals.  It’s all about choice, as long as most of your choices are healthy, an occasional splurge will have no impact on your weight loss or weight management efforts.  Giving yourself “permission” to occasionally (like once a week) eat your favorite trademark treat whether its ice-cream, chocolate, or nacho chips will have little or no impact on your weight loss success.

Myth #6-Never Eat in the Evening
Contrary to the popular belief that post-dinner indulgences are converted immediately to fat, keep in mind, its total calorie consumption within a 24 hour period, rather than time of day, that is the key to weight loss/management success!  It’s also helpful to keep balance in mind-if you’ve had a reasonable day nutritionally, an evening treat won’t hurt you. That said, it’s not wise to go completely overboard at anytime, but especially at bedtime, because the human body simply does not burn as many calories while sleeping as it does when awake.  So before you indulge, consider how much you’ve already eaten during the day in relation to how much exercise you got, then, proceed accordingly.  When in doubt, and only if you are really hungry, opt for a healthy, filling snack or have a cup of tea.

Myth #7-Drinking Water Will Aid in Shrinking Your Waistline
If only that were true! Then all we’d need to do is drink down a dozen glasses of water a day and we’d all have it made! But, the true fact of the matter is, water simply keeps you hydrated and may lessen the effect of cravings. Many people mistake thirst for hunger.  Another benefit of drinking water is that it can improve your energy levels so you feel more like exercising which will help with losing and/or maintaining your weight. So keep drinking your water-but don’t expect miracles from it!

Myth #8-A High Intensity Exercise Program is the Best Way
Some people think the only way to lose weight or keep it off is to participate in a high intensity exercise program (and for everyone, this is different!).  Often, this kind of thinking sets a person up for failure right from the start because it stops them from doing anything at all! Jumping right into high intensity is just too intimidating for most people so they don’t do a thing!   Or, they may have all the motivation in the world when they first get started, but it would take incredible discipline to maintain and they give up.  It’s always best to gently shift into exercise and then incrementally increase exercise intensity.  And, yes, it’s still wise to always consult your physician before engaging in any kind of exercise.

Myth #9-The Best Way to Lose Weight is by Skipping Meals
While this may seem like an obvious idea to some, after all, if you cut out some meals and the calories that go along with them, you should see results, right?  Wrong! Skipping meals only leaves you cranky, feeling lethargic, leads to nutritional deficiencies and it’s likely you’ll end up binging because you are so hungry! And when you do finally eat something, your body is in survival mode-meaning it was starving and now that it has food, it will store as much as possible to prepare for the next time you decide to stop eating for a long period of time.  Many people skip breakfast thinking they will not eat as much, but again, this only sets you up for being more hungry later in the day and eating more than you normally would for dinner or before bed.

Myth #10-Diet Pills Will Work to Make You Lose Weight
This one makes me so sad! Never , ever will diet pills, powders or potions work in the long run! Besides leaving you feeling jittery or other side effects, the bottom line is, you would have to keep taking them to maintain the weight loss because you have not really learned how to do it naturally! What truly works better in the long run?  A common sense approach, natural, holistic and REAL!

What The Bleep Do We Know!?

Originally released in February 2004 in one theater in Yelm, Washington, What the BLEEP Do We Know!? went on to become the fifth highest grossing documentary in the United States, with ticket sales of $12 Million.

Shunned by all movie distributors, the producers set about distributing and marketing the movie themselves in a “proof of concept” strategy to show theater owners there was indeed a market for spiritually oriented films that catered to audiences’ intelligence, not their lowest common denominator.

Although rejected by every major film festival (Sundance, Berlin, Toronto, Cannes, etc…), What the BLEEP did get entered in five smaller festivals, and won in every one. This, along with the grass roots, word-of-mouth campaign, kept the film in theaters for weeks and months on end. After five months of surprising box office numbers, the film attracted the attention of Samuel Goldwyn Films, and the producers entered into a distribution deal. The word-of-mouth buzz continued and the film showed real staying power (it played in one theater in Phoenix for 40+ consecutive weeks).

Following its theatrical run, FOX picked up the DVD rights and released What the BLEEP Do We Know!? March 15, 2005. The DVD immediately shot to the top of Amazon’s best selling list, and was named Amazon’s #1 DVD surprise of the year. To date it has sold over a million copies.
